Why do we eat animals?
Most of us think this question is absurd, but if pressed to answer we tend to provide one of a number of rationalizations. For example

Or is eating animals in fact a prejudice, involving a thought process similar to the thought process behind racism and sexism? How exactly could the subject of eating animals teach us anything about prejudice and human rights? And supposing humans actually did need to eat animals to stay healthy, what can logic tell us about how we should act in such a situation?

Full disclosure I'm vegan.
I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to most effectively answer many of the arguments against veganism without resorting to emotional appeals (which are always Debbie-downers and not always well received). The torture and suffering inherent to factory farming makes for very impressive visual aids for veganism, and in this way, those arguing for veganism have a leg-up; few movements have such an emotionally gut-wrenching appeal. For instance, women's suffrage could not rely on undercover footage of, say, women being deprived of the right to vote, since this lacks shock-value; as a result, the success of women's suffrage resulted from appeals to rationality.
I feel like many vegans (myself included) rely considerably on the shock-value of violence in animal agriculture when promoting veganism. However, in situations where showing the horrors of animal agriculture to non-vegans either feels inappropriate ("Aren't you going to have any of Grandma's Thanksgiving turkey?"), unwelcome ("Don't tell me... I don't want to know!"), or doesn't quite cut it ("Wow, that is just terrible! Even more reason to only buy humanely raised meat."), well articulated appeals to logic are required.
Given my intents and purposes for this book, here's how I received it

THE GOOD

* I enjoyed this book because it provides what I sought after rebuttal of common rationalizations for meat-eating and/or arguments against veganism. The breadth of this book is impressive for such a short length; and the logical reasoning repeatedly provided ensures that, if any specific argument against veganism was not explicitly covered in "Meat Logic," the reader will be able to effectively extrapolate the logic emphasized in this book to that specific argument.
* This book was also a quick read, and was hard to put down during some chapters (most notably the philosophical history of animal exploitation and animal rights, as well as the discussion of speciesism).
* Many sections were so beautifully written that I highlighted them in my app to read and reread. As I previously mentioned, since much of the vegan rhetoric relies on the shock-and-awe of industrialized animal agriculture, it was refreshing to read well-reasoned arguments against animal exploitation, no matter how "humane."
* Many sources for further reading are provided throughout the book, and scientific references can also be found in the back of the book for easy fact-checking.
* If you're a seasoned vegan, new vegan, or moving toward veganism, this book will provide a non-emotional, logic-driven pat on the back. And who doesn't want that?

THE BAD

* The writing. Oh my, the writing. Although many parts of the book are exceptionally well-written, some are amazingly bad. The writer does a huge disservice to his cause by his sporadic instances of high school level writing, since these instances succeed in both discrediting the writer and discouraging me from ever lending this book out to non-vegans. It feels like this book was rushed to publication with little editing.
Two examples
"Some people argue that we should stop feeding the animals our crops and should let them eat grass instead, but it is simply not feasible to do that at the massive scale or speed of factory farming, it still has many of the same ecological problems as pointed out above, and anyway one can even only attempt to make such an argument when one sees animals only as things and resources that were made for us to use as we see fit, with no real moral status of their own."

"In a world where the rights of sentient beings was taken seriously, farmers would take the matter very seriously."

* Despite the title, this book is not an objective examination of the logic behind eating animals, nor is it an anthropological examination of this custom. Instead, this book is less "Meat Logic Why Do We Eat Animals?" and more "Meat Logic The Logical Inconsistencies of Eating Animals." I still found it to be a valuable resource for my purposes; however, veganism is openly promoted in this book.
* I'm not sure who the target audience is for this book. Is the target audience vegan? If so, the author's blatant attempts to persuade the reader to adopt a vegan diet are wasted. Is the target audience NOT vegan? If so, then the author's persuasive attempts are not wasted, insofar as the reader doesn't get frustrated with the fact that a book promising to discuss our reasons for eating animals is actually a book refuting these reasons.

OVERALL
I'm glad I purchased this book. It's a fantastic resource for ethical vegans trying to better articulate, or further explore, their view. I expect it to be a great resource for those interested in veganism or those interested in reasons against animal exploitation ("humane" or otherwise).
However, the author clearly needs to edit this book, and it's my opinion that the title should be more explicit to reflect the book's agenda.
this book is an excellent collection of well thought out and indisputable logical reasoning as to why there are no sound justifications to exploit and murder non-human animals. it should be required reading for anyone who is deluded into believing that the "might makes right" argument is a sufficient excuse for harming and killing innocent, helpless sentient beings for pleasure and profit.

When reading this book - it may be wise for the reader to open the book with an open mind. Put away any preconceived notions and think about what is presented. The book lays out some background and then presents information and suggests the reader question the entire process which is taking place.
Most of the points and the logic meant to be invoked I would agree with - one point I disagree with is the idea or notion of "obligate carnivore", I feel that is a misunderstood concept and in general an inaccurate observation. (or moreover subjugate thinking of man)

Excellent book that helped me stay away from eating meat. Not the typical 'veganism' book. This book morally ask us why and explains from every aspect.
While veganism is a burgeoning subject, there are few books that so comprehensively and holistically cover the morality of (not) eating animals as Meat Logic does. Charles Horn has composed a knockout piece, sure to stand the test of time and dozens of arguments to come.
What's so impressive is that Horn does not press into many "mental regions" of the world aside from logic. This is what makes the book so paramount. He lays out 30 or so ideas/arguments that carnists typically throw towards vegans, and he reconstructs proper, moral logic from the ground up.
One should not read this book and feel overwhelmingly guilty if they are an omnivore or carnist; they should simply gather what Horn provides and feel relieved and empowered to help share the truth with others. There are no logical, sound arguments in favor of eating animals, and Meat Logic lays out a simple framework through which all creatures (especially humans) can work towards the flourishing of all life on Earth.
Amazing. I've listened to it multiple times.
