Mother Teresa’s Advice for Jilted Lovers is a hilarious, irreverent take on the darker side of spirituality.
Every time Tara Holland thinks she’s getting close to finally having her white wedding, the man who should be on his knee, giving her roses, winds up on his back, pushing up daisies. Needless to say, Tara’s beginning to think she’s cursed when it comes to men.
Her best friend, Betsy, who’s always there to put the pieces back together, convinces Tara she’s the cause of each of her boyfriend’s untimely exits to the other side. Could it be that Tara has that kind of psychic power? And is Betsy right that women all over the world would pay a pretty penny for it?
What follows is a wild and humorous trek down the path of Tara’s spiritual growth and ultimate awakening. But the road to enlightenment is no cakewalk. It’s fraught with stacks of ill-gotten cash, death threats, and orange jumpsuits.

Mother Teresa Advice for Jilted Lovers edition by Donna Barker Literature Fiction eBooks
A surprising tale about the practical and magical powers of love and jinxes, disguised as a chick-lit mystery. How many genres can you pack into one novel? This one melds at least three, starting out as classic chick lit: bold, edgy, funny, modern, urban, all about working girls’ lives and loves. The narrative has a bright and sassy voice that pulls the reader right in, and before you know it, the story has morphed into a supernatural/spiritual murder mystery overlying a sweet romance. The combo arises from the pairing of Tara Holland and her best friend for two decades, Betsy, two self-employed thirty-somethings in Vancouver. Tara is a technical and business writer with a perpetually broken heart, and Betsy is a marketing/web guru who skips like a stone across bisexual relationships. She has given up on romance, while Tara is always seeking Mr. Right. But every time she thinks she’s found him, he ends up dead through an assortment of seeming innocent accidents. Is Tara jinxing her lovers?
Betsy also sees a potential moneymaker in helping women stuck in bad situations escape them through Tara’s seemingly psychic abilities. Tara cooperates by adopting many of Betsy’s new-age-type practices to learn how to channel her power. But she insists that it only be used for good, rather than simply removing troublesome men from desperate women’s lives.
After many false starts, they put together the web-based enterprise "Mother Teresa’s Advice for Jilted Lovers." Then all sorts of strange things begin to happen, while the money rolls in as does death threats and dubious untimely demises.
Meanwhile, Tara finally finds the man of her dreams in Glen—until he departs with no warning, leaving behind a cryptic clue. Tara recovers from a broken heart once again with Betsy’s nursing. Suddenly, Tara begins to question everything through a lens of darkness. Tara finds herself on the run to save herself. .
The story’s twists and turns make it impossible to guess the ending. For readers who want more, the ending leads clearly into the beginning of the next volume in this sharp new series.

Mother Teresa Advice for Jilted Lovers edition by Donna Barker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book could have been so much more than it is. It is not bad, it just is not great either. There are moments when it seemed to be right on the edge of tipping towards being better and then....... It is worth the read though. It will keep you amused if this is the kind of book you like to read. There are some important topics that the author throws in (without being preachy) that I found refreshing. It is also funny at times, along with the drama and the paranormal. It is a definite good versus evil, love will conquer all type of book.
So I would say this is a book that aspires to be great but hovers over good.
Having read Mother Teresa's Advice for Jilted Lovers, I can hardly wait for its sequel, Karma for Killers. If you're tired of reading same old same old, this is the book for you. Fast-paced, funny, moving, inspirational, following Tara, Betsy and Glen thru the twists and turns of this cosmic whodunnit will not only keep you on the edge of your seat, turning pages long past your bedtime, as I did, but will also make you think and leave you feeling freshly washed and rinsed inside and out.
Donna Barker has something I’m terribly envious of…VOICE! in spades. Wow. Barker's murder mystery, women's fiction, self help treatise is a genre mash-up like no other. Fun, fast paced, witty, wry, clever, beguilingly mysterious and metaphysically challenging, even while being tongue in cheek and laugh out loud funny.
Someone just break your heart? Boyfriend behaving like a jerk? Thinking of swearing off men forever? This is the book for you. Buy a tub of Ben n Jerrys and a bottle if wine and settle in for a helluva ride.
I got this as a freebee on , loved it and I hope more people will too. My rating? I've rounded up because things a well written, daring, original debut that I think deserved it.
While thinking about how to rate this, I'm struck again with how much I depend on putting things in neat little boxes and not finding - or knowing - of a box to put this lovely, original, quirky story in. And then I was struck by the thought that whatever I was going to write so that you, the reader of this review, would know what to expect, it probably was going to put you off, because, well, most people like to read books that fit into nice little boxes too. This author purposely went and written a blend that's never been done religious self help mixed into a romance, suspense, mystery pack. Here here!
I am mostly a romance reader. And romance consists of a focus on a couple with a HEA at the end, most preferably with some hot sexy scenes thrown in, but not too much, otherwise it becomes erotica. Without the sexy scenes it almost immediately becomes a 'clean' romance with the stigma it's for super religious readers only. Suspense focusses on the solving of a puzzle and YA on, well, young adults.
This book would be a women's fiction, I guess. It's not mainly about the romance, although it does play a large part. It's not mainly on the solving of a puzzle, although yes... It has sex, but of the closed door varierty, with a single first person POV which gives it a YA-feel, but without the young adults. It is however a coming of age book in that it has a heroine striving to become her true person and finding what she does best.
Mweh, I hear some readers of this review thinking. The great part about this book however is that it does all of the above, but in a way that's truly fresh. I mean, look at the title alone. And it's not a holy book, but in fact the title is the name of a business the heroine started and made a lot of money with. It's also a book about opposites, bad and good and grey.
So, when you're in a slumb or when you like to try something new on a more regular basis, try this.
