I have to start out with just Wow.......!!! I am not sure if it was just the place I was at in my life or what, but I did not expect this book to have the great impact on my life that it did. When I received this book in the mail, I was sitting down with a cup of tea at the table (not my normal place to read) and I sat there just reading and reading. The tears started streaming down my face as I read this tale of horror, but mixed with how to survive, how to forgive and how to go on when you feel like your heart was ripped out by another person's sinful actions. The story of the Amish school shooting just seemed like a small part of this book, but instead I saw that Mr Beiler instead addressed the fact that these horrible things may effect you the rest of your life. The widow of the man who shot those young girls, the mothers who may feel guilty for leaving the school room with their daughters in there, the girls that survived and that is not to mention the flashbacks. I learned that forgiveness does not mean forgetting, but as one person stated which reached my heart was "We do not forgive and forget, we forgive because we cannot forget." Right now going through my own painful lesson in forgiveness, I realized that I can forgive because I can't forget. I have to forgive because I cannot let one person's sin ruin my life and continue on with the pattern.
This book will deeply touch you as it addressed much more than a horrible tragedy, but the story of how the author himself dealt with other personal grief as well. It really helped me understand what the verses "Love your Enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you." really mean in our daily lives. Read this book. If you think you are a Christian read this book. If you think you know the power of forgiveness read this book.
Good book
A TV movie actually got me interested in this story and I purchased this book based on other readers reviews. I was not disappointed. Reading the details about this tragedy and it's aftermath was moving especially since the author was raised Amish. His obvious familiarity with the people and with the area this event took place made it that much more moving. Most of us I'm sure are not familiar and don't understand the ways of the Amish. I thought the author did an excellent job of explaining the Amish people and their incredible ability to forgive the person responsible for this tragedy.
I also like how not much of the book is spent describing what must have been a gruesome scene in the school house.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
As an author myself, I look for maturity in painting word pictures, craftsmanship, style, creativity, and the gift of writing. Jonas Beiler rates high in all five categories. He stayed the course of the book's purpose and threw in some curves that reinforced his sincerety and credibility with me. Forgiveness was fleshed out and presented in a way that will be offensive to some, overwhelming to others, incomprehensible to many, and a lesson that will allow the little light bulb to come on in a few truth seekers needing to see forgiveness come alive.

I learned a great deal about the Amish and rode an emotional rollercoaster throughout the book. As a father and grandfather, I stood in the field outside the schoolhouse waiting --just waiting. Then the author brougt me to a point of crisis in faith and Christianity in which I asked myself "How do I forgive?"

Do not read this book if you do not wish to have the foundations of your faith shaken. Do not delve into the chapters of this wonderful book unless you are willing to be drawn into it and its deeply spiritual scenarios by the author. Be prepared to weep, to be angry, to be remorseful of your own spiritual condition, and be carried on a journey into the twilight zone of sociopathy, grief, mourning, and revenge --all are human conditions.

I encourage the purchase of this book as gifts to friends and people in need of its message. It would be a wise investment in casting one's bread upon the waters.
It is an interesting read on the Amish. But the greater good is their understanding of forgiveness. It made me want to strive to do much better.
The first one-third or so of this book deals with the facts leading up to the schoolhouse shootings and the event itself. It does not dwell on the horror but personalizes each child and their family. The latter two-thirds of the book describes the general reaction of the Amish to the offender's memory as well as to his family. It gives examples of the relentless forgiveness of the Amish. Most telling is how they pursue a relationship with the offender. The author's own parents provide one of many examples. Their young adult son was killed by an oncoming truck while riding his motorcycle. Instead of blaming the trucker, the parents developed a friendship with the trucker which started by inviting him to the funeral. As the Amish pursued his friendship, they developed it into a tradition of having an annual dinner together. The trucker then gifted the parents with trees/plants from his nursery on each occasion. The author discusses the tritely used "forgive and forget" and why this term is so inappropriate, and how forgiveness is not a one-time act, even for the Amish. This is a life-changing book. "How to forgive" is a decision, but what I liked most about this book is that it gives pertinent examples of life-wrenching situations and how forgiveness plays out in each of them.
