What a debut novel from Jessica Ruben!!! I was not expecting this to blow me away and Rising did just that!! I freaking FLOVED it!! I was sucked in from page one and the story didn't let go of me until the last page! Rising is a suspenseful coming of age story about a high school senior looking for something better than life in the projects. Its a story of survival and finding love when you least expect it. It's heartbreaking, it's gritty, and a story of rising above the crappy cards you were dealt in life. I cannot wait to read more from Ms Ruben and will be a forever follower of her work! Rising will be on my Best of 2018 list as I thought it was a huge 5 star read!!

Eve is a eighteen year old high school senior that lives in a gang infested low income housing building in New York. You would think she would become a product of her environment but she is has always been book smart, not street smart. Her goal is to get out of the projects and attend college but with so many factors working against her she must stay focused on the end prize. freedom. Her older sister, Janelle, is always there for her and looks out for her. She dropped out of high school and had to get a job to help pay the bills so Janelle was not going to let the same thing happen to Eve. Their mother is more of a part time mom only coming home when she is coming down from a bender or not with her latest client. Eve isn't a party girl, she would rather get lost in a good book then socialize but when Eve takes her out one night, she doesn't realize her life is about to change.

Janelle takes Eve to a club where they also have underground fights. The main effect features The Bull and Eve is immediately in awe of the male specimen she is watching. She's never seen anything like him. She is only used to the thugs and punks from her neighborhood. The Bull aka Vincent is like an enigma that she is drawn to. After the fight she seems him at the bar and they seem to hit it off. Their chemistry is off the charts and they both can't resist the pull they feel for one another.

Time goes by and it seems that Eve sees Vincent on occasion. Every time they are together she feels like there is something more but Vincent seems to keep her at arms length. He give her bits and pieces of himself and Eve knows he's holding back. With graduation and college on the horizon she knows she must focus getting out of the projects and going to college so she accepts that maybe her time with Vincent isn't now. She accepts that a guy like Vincent is not for a girl like her. He oozed sex, power, and money where she was just a girl from the wrong side of town with nothing to offer.

What does the future hold for Eve? Will she be able to rise above her upbringing and make it out of the projects or will she be like her mother and be a slave to the gangsters and thugs that are on every corner? Rising is a MUST read book and I just LOVED every second of it!! I cannot wait to see what is next for Eve as she starts a new chapter in her life!

What a surprisingly wonderful story! I shelved this because I thought it was a mafia romance. I bought it because it was on sale, I am reviewing it because I LOVED IT!

This was nothing like I was expecting, it is a beautiful story with strong and interesting characters. The mafia is light, but I could feel everything in this story; the violence, the depression, the hope and joy!! I am hoping that book 2 has more action and gruffness. Not because thus book lack anything, but because I want (need) more! I might have squealed with joy a few times, it has been quite awhile since I have read such an amazing story.

There were a few editing errors, but I did not let that ruin my reading experience. They were mostly missing quotes, punctuation, and continuity errors when font chanced from thoughts to text and vice versa. Off to read book two! And at full price! That rarely happens for me, that I get so excited tgat I immediately buy the next book. I have been known to leave a series for years waiting for the next book to reduce in price. That is how I know I really loved this story! Buy, read, enjoy!!
Eve lives in an unsafe area and she tries to stay invisible, and away from most just wanting to get out of where she lives and go to college, which works until one night, and it’s only by coincidence that she’s saved from the gang and the leader that works out she’s a virgin and promises to come back for her.
When her sister invites her to an underground fight she decides to go, when she spots the man across from her, she realises her gorgeous, then she sees him go into the ring to fight and win. Her sister tells her his name is Bull, no one knows who he is, when she’s at the bar and he introduced, himself as Vincent, Eve wonders why.
Eve continues to see Vincent and their chemistry is amazing, Eve’s employer offers to fix the leader or the gang, not wanting to start a gang war Eve begs him not too. After a panic attack, Vincent gets Eve to tell him about the attack and he promises to fix it, and no one will hurt her ever, he lets her know she deserves more than what he can give her and a man like him, and promises never to lie to her, but after an amazing night and Eve losing her virginity with Vincent she leaves, and they become distant with each other

Eve finally gets accepted to college after putting Vincent out of her mind, when she starts making friends and they all start to look at something, Eve turns and sees Vincent, when they tell her who he is she is speechless. Can’t wait for the next book to see what happens.
Underground fights. Gangs. Mafia. Cartel. Meh not really my thing, but it came highly recommended so I picked it up. O M G this debut author blew me away! This is NOT a fighter, gangster/mafia book. This is suspense romance at it's finest. This is the first book of 3. The ending/cliffy was tolerable, but I still preordered the next book because I have to continue with Eve's story. Born into poverty just trying to stay alive until she is able to get out, go to college and make something of herself. Eve's story is hard to read even heartbreaking at times, but that is life. Eve's life. She meets Vincent at an underground fight night and despite their connection, Vincent maintains they can only be friends. He helps her when it's needed most and... and I don't want to give spoilers. You need to read this book for yourself. It's not a hearts and flowers romance novel, but it is a must read!
