Shaman Cole Noah Gordon 9780751500820 Books

It's been a while since I read Shaman, but it was flat out awesome and perfectly wonderful! This is one story that will catch and hold you quickly, and it will never let you down.
A fairly large novel, you will be disappointed when it finally ends....not with the ending, but because you'd been enjoying reading it so much.
I read Shaman when I was on a week's fishing trip down in Baja, California, and I well remember sitting out on the warm patio and being deeply engrossed in this captivating story. You can't miss with this one!

Shaman Cole Noah Gordon 9780751500820 Books Reviews

Just like how I couldn’t put “The Physician “ down while reading , Shaman was as interesting if not more. The most fascinating part is how generation after generation Cole family is blessed with natural gift of healing and how they always make a difference in the circumstances they live in using their intuition , and skills and knowledge in medicine . The historical outlook on civil war , conditions and lives of union and confederate soldiers , and US political scenario were all so well depicted. The rituals and spirituality of native Americans was one of the most fascinating part, drives me to read more books on native Americans esp Shamanism. The best part is how people immigrated to the US to become a part of the country , and have and will make America great because of their vast cultural background, experiences and diversity. An awesome read especially for historical fiction lovers , can’t wait to start the 3rd book in Cole Trilogy .
There is so much life in this story, its hard to close it, say it's over. The Cole family are strong, dedicated people and against all odds, Shaman proves to be the strongest. With only one desire--to be a physician, his deafness becomes an asset. He has to work harder to prove his worth. He falls in love but Rachel is Jewish. He struggles with the death of his father and the Civil War takes his brother away. This story is rich with love, passion, dedication. Near perfect prose..a must read.
This is a good story that pulled me in. It has a very different in time and setting from the first book in the trilogy, but like the first book, it has people you can care about. And also, both books deal with different cultures mixing, not always happily, sometimes very cruelly But the author handles human foibles with empathy. It is a story about doctors, yes, but also about healing more than the physical. I recommend it.
This is the third book I have read by Noah Gordan.

This book strikes a personal note as I went to high school in central Illinois and know a bit about the area known as the Land of Lincoln.

What I found interesting was the feelings of those living regarding race, religion, and immigration. The world seems to revolve rather than moving in a straight line.

Noah Gordon did his research and was able to put it down on paper in a very engaging story. I plan to read the third in this series
I loved this book almost as much as "The Physician". It takes place about 800 years later featuring a descendant also named Dr. Rob Cole who became known as Shaman. All first borns in the family were named Rob Cole and became physicians. Because of an illness he had as a child he became deaf. With the help of a teacher and friends he learned to lip read very rare for a doctor.. Some of the events and people were true and so this book is an historical novel. I highly recommend reading this book, but it's a must to read "The physician" first.
I read Noah Gordon's second novel in the Cole Trilogy with great expectations after loving his first book . I was not disappointed in the least. The pace was steady and the idea of having Shaman read his dad's diary and unfold the latter's life to us was simply brilliant. I was taken back in time to visit that historic period of the Indian rebellions and the civil war under an unusual point of view. In addition, it showed two generations of Cole doctors at work. All the characters are well developed, but, of course, the protagonists are more complex as well as the plot with its frequent twists. Not only is the story interesting thanks to its meticulous description of the conditions of medicine at that time, but it also succeeds in touching your soul with its thoughts on race, religion, love, hate and politics. I enjoy the author's light and yet profound approach to so many ethical matters. I have already started reading the third book.
It was quite a long story encompassing two generations but it was worth my time. If a reader is interested in historical fiction they will enjoy this book. The Indians of the time, are routed off of their fertile farmland. The Indians are an important thread throughout the book. There are many historical details regarding how physicians treated patients and how medicine evolved. As a child, Shaman loses his hearing due to high fever but learns how to lip read. With much fortitude, he works with his father who is a physician and is accepted to medical school. The time period of their practice is the Civil War. It is a very interesting, well written story.
