When I started Pacific, I had trouble getting into Drury's staccato prose of carefully-honed short sentences. Each sentence stands on its own, expressing a pointed observation or a short snippet of dialogue. Ostensibly, this is a story in two towns: Los Angeles and Stone City, a small town in the upper midwest. A group of interconnected people in these towns, each somewhat of a wandering lost soul, all seem to be seeking comfort despite not knowing where to find it. Micah Darling moves to California to live with his absent actress mother, Joan. Micah's father, Tiny, becomes lonely without him and resorts to thievery to entertain himself. Micah's sister, Lyris, lives with her boyfriend Albert in an apartment above a store owned by Louise, Tiny's ex-wife and current wife of the ex-sheriff, Dan. Dan, as a private investigator, trails Jack Snow, a fraudster, and his crazy, mystical childhood friend, Sandra. As these and other characters lives' collide and interconnect, there at first seems to be little method to the madness.

Despite the slow start and meandering storyline, however, I was quickly sucked in. Drury's terse prose is rhythmic, carrying you from one sentence to the next as if they were waves. The plot itself jumps from one character to the next with little apparent logic, yet, as a whole, it blends together to tell a story of people dealing with their problems, often by seeking solace in others.

Having some experience in both places, I thought Drury captured both the depravity of Los Angeles and the earnestness of the Midwest beautifully. Although it reads as a quiet novel, it is full of craziness: drug-addled teenagers, insane women, murder, robbery, adultery, and rebellion. Despite what would sound like too much for such a short novel, Drury manages to embrace the characters more than their actions to create a moving portrait of these characters' lives. Don't come for a riveting story, but stay for the powerful observations of a masterful writer.

Pacific Tom Drury 9780802119995 Books Reviews

easy reading at its finest
Drury is always great, but this plot seems like two separate books. Good stuff, but I wanted more.Doesn't live up to The End of Vandalism
This book was a quick dip into the lives of characters I fell in love with years ago with his previous book, The End of Vandalism. It was too short and by that I mean, it could never be long enough. I would read into this world forever, for the rest of my life. Tell us more, Tom.
Drury's finest novel. In lesser hands, this kind of dead-pan style can seem affected, but not here. Makes me think of a really effective jazz riff - it gets where it's going in an interesting way.
I found this novel engrossing and entertaining but hard to Define. The novel contains many strange and unexplainable characters. Despite these strange characters it is magnificently entertaining and glorious. It is a strange but wonderful read. Somewhat unsettling and quirky but wonderfully constructed and enjoyable.
It's my summer of Tom Drury. I am late in discovering him, but making up for lost time. Love his writing--feel like I grew up with his characters and love them all. He writes with such affection and insight.
I loved “The End of Vandalism.” I love this book too, which picks up many of the same characters and the interwoven threads of their lives. Drury style is sparse and masterful, generating the kind of emotional involvement one can get from poetry. It took me a long time to read this rather short novel. Why? Because I found the first chapter so beautifully written that I would have to put the book down when the chapter ended with Tiny’s remembered image of Micah and the goat dancing around the yard. When I came back to it, sometimes weeks later, I would start by re-reading the first chapter and, damn, the same thing would happen again and again. This is a book to savor, like the best jazz music, intensely original and ultimately immensely moving. I hope Drury picks up these characters in yet another novel or two.
