A brilliant page-turning drama, penned by a former UN Observer during the 1970s Lebanese Civil War. Fry says the story is semi-biographical with a believable romance added. He would have had to experience the events of the story to write about them so convincingly. He was there when a UN Observer Post was caught in the crossfire of an Israeli revenge attack.His characters are convincing, from heroine Leila Ashrawi to his Irish observer colleague, Frank McCorley and the latter's passion for Guinness.
Leila, a middle-class Palestine woman dispossessed during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war is in love with a New Zealand Army captain, John Ferris.
They plan to settle together on the other side of the world. But the promised new life is continually threatened by anguish and desperation.
What concludes is an action-packed thriller modelled on real events. Give yourself a space of time before reading this. It is difficult to put down. How long will it be before this book is discovered by a movie director? My guess is it is just the story for New Zealand movie director, Peter Jackson.
